The Kenya Sevens team began their campaign at the third leg of the IRB Sevens Series in Wellington, New Zealand with wins over the U.S.A and Tonga in the wee hours of Friday morning.
Kenya beat Tonga 15 - 7 before coming from behind to beat U.S.A. 24 - 7. Despite losing their final group game to England, Benjamin Ayimba's team still made it to the main cup quarter finals.
In the first game against Tonga, Kenya had to come from a try down to see off the islanders.
Gibson Weru was first on the score sheet for Kenya before Speedster Collins Injera made it 10 -7 at half time.
Injera added his second of the match just after half time to make the score 15-7 in favour of Benjamin Ayimba's team as they survived the early scare to see off Tonga.
In the second match against the U.S.A., Kenya also had to come from behind as the American took an early lead.
Innocent Simiyu finished off a great move after Lavin Asego's run as Kenya got back into the game as the U.S. held on for a 7-5 lead at the break. Asego then put in a try if his own to give Kenya a 10-7 lead after half time before Injera's try and Asego's successful conversion made it 17-7 in favour of the east Africans. Asego added his second in the dying moments of the game and his conversion made it 24 -7 as Kenya ran away comfortable winners.
Kenya and England met in the group lead decider after they had both won their opening two games. Gibson Weru gave Benjamin Ayimba's team the lead after good inter change play, but England bounced back with two quick tries, one immediately after a kick off. Kenya were unable to recover and England added a third just before half time to take a 17-5 lead going into the break.
After half time, Kenya were unable to put up with England's pace and eventually conceded a 4th try. Simiyu added a consolation try for Kenya but it was too little to late as England won 24-10. Despite the loss, Kenya go through to the main cup quarters. Comments (0) |
