Anti-drug campaigners in Mombasa have called on the government to involve the Kenya navy officers in the fight against drugs along the coast line.

The campaigners claimed police are unable to deal with the drug menace in the region and the government should deploy navy patrol boats in the Indian Ocean to monitor illegal activities.

Nominated MP Sheikh Mohamed Dor and activist Amina Abdalla alleged that drug traffickers have been using the porous Indian Ocean coast line to sneak narcotics into the country.

The two said some of the ships headed to the port of Mombasa offload drugs into small boats, which in turn transport and offloaded illegal contents at the unmanned sections of the coastline.

Speaking during the United Nations day against drug abuse, the leaders also called on the government to use a report released by NACADA as a basis to declare the menace a national disaster.

They further called for the establishment of rehabilitation centres in the coast region which, according to the NACADA report, has the highest number of drug abuse cases.
